For over a century, narcissi flowers have been a symbol of Montreux and the Riviera. Their flowering in spring is a pretty big deal\u2014celebrated by the Swiss and also a magnet for tourists who come to see the famous \u201cMay snow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately for us, one of the best spots to see them is the little village of Les Avants, just a few quick train stops from Chernex. We\u2019ve been heading up for the weekend markets and getting to know the locals\u2014Cedar, of course, has already made himself at home on the bouncy castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The market is small, quaint, and reminds me of the farmers and artisan markets back home. I even caught myself getting a little homesick for the farm while chatting with a garlic farmer who had an impressive spread of garlic pastes, pickles, and preserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Sunday, we were lucky to be invited up to Yvan\u2019s parents\u2019 chalet, which sits right in the middle of the picturesque alpine slopes dotted with flowering narcissi. We even got to help the girls pick and wrap bouquets they sell to tourists\u2014such a fun way to take part in the tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was Sheila\u2019s and my second visit to the chalet. With its beautiful garden and outdoor kitchen BBQ, it\u2019s the kind of place that just makes you fall in love with Switzerland. We were treated to a fantastic meal and, even more importantly, really great company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such a nice way to catch up with Yvan\u2019s family, and share a beautiful meal in a beautiful place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
