Pretty neat that Cedar\u2019s first real castle experience\u2014and no, Castle Fun Park definitely doesn\u2019t count<\/strong>\u2014is within walking distance of where we\u2019re living. And walk we did!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lakeshore promenade (the same one we ran\/scootered earlier in the week) stretches all the way from Montreux to the drawbridge gates of Ch\u00e2teau de Chillon<\/strong>. The castle and surrounding island has been occupied\u2014since around the 11th century<\/strong>. It\u2019s been home to everyone from the Lords of Savoy<\/strong> to Fran\u00e7ois Bonivard<\/strong> to the Bernese army<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also inspired writers like Mary Shelley<\/strong>, Lord Byron<\/strong>, Rousseau<\/strong>, and Victor Hugo<\/strong>. And today? It blew our 5-year-old\u2019s mind<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We explored it room by room<\/em> (and I mean EVERY room<\/strong>), from the dungeon prison all the way to the top of the keep. Cedar was on the lookout for dragons, knights, and bad guys\u2014but after making it through the dungeon and seeing the \u201cshadows\u201d (a very cool interactive projection of the silhouettes of knights, lords, and princesses who once lived there), he got into it. He was all in\u2014climbing stairs, opening old wooden doors, and poking around every nook and cranny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlights?<\/strong> For him, definitely the castle toilets, secret passageways, and the dungeon prison. He had a lot<\/em> of questions about both. For us, it was pretty wild to be walking the same stone floors worn smooth by imprisoned monks and touching the wall where Lord Byron literally carved his name<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was Sheila\u2019s and my second time visiting the Ch\u00e2teau\u2014but seeing it through Cedar\u2019s eyes? That made it something else entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pretty special.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
