A Little Life in the Alps

Running, Swimming, Scootering Our Way Into the Swiss Lifestyle—Ready or Not

Geez. It didn’t take long for us to get swept up in the very active Swiss lifestyle. Exactly one day after we arrived, we were already participating in a local race along the Riviera—Sheila running, while Cedar and I joined on scooter. Imagine a version of Vancouver’s seawall, but even more spectacular: beautifully landscaped, dotted with sculptures and art installations, and yes—even the iconic Freddie Mercury statue standing tall by the lake.

There’s a reason the Swiss are among the healthiest and longest-living people in the world: they move—a lot. Whether it’s hiking, biking, skiing, or just strolling the promenades, life here happens outdoors.

For me, someone who’s gradually settled into a more sedentary routine—too many meetings, way too much screen time—a Swiss alpine anti-screentime detox might be just what the doctor ordered.

Fun fact: We’re just across the lake from France—Évian-les-Bains, the birthplace of the world-famous Evian mineral water. But honestly? We don’t need it. Here in Chernex, you can still fill your bottle straight from one of the many public, spring-fed fountains—most dating back to the mid-1800s. And Cedar? He’s already become a pro at finding them.
